The evil Within was a highly praised survival horror game after it’s release in october 2014, selling nearly 1,000,000 copies within it’s first week . created by Shinji Mikami, who’s also known for the renowned resident Evil series, The Evil Within was so much more than just a Resident Evil knock off. The Evil within took it to the next level with its excessive usage of gore and blood, suspensful chase sequences, utilizing horror-noir cinematics, and its well developed mechanics system. One of the greatest things The Evil WIthin did was balance its usage of horror and action, something we don’t often see done well in most video games. For a 2014 video game, the evil within does a great job living up to modern times. What could possibly go wrong with a beloved horror survival game?

The Evil within’s first additional content was The Assignment, where rather than following detective sebastian Castellanos, you follow his partner Detective Juli kidman. Months later, they released The Consequence which was meant to be a continuation of The Assignment. The DLCs were solid expansive content that further developed The Evil Within’s lore and world. The DLC content was highly praised for its stealth-based gameplay that many of the player-base had enjoyed; However, not ALL of the fans enjoyed this. The Evil Within itself has a well balance mixture of stealth and action combat, which the DLCs seem to completely ignore to highlight a frightening experience for the players.
After we wrap up Detective Juli Kidman’s story in The Assignment and The Consequence, The Executioner was the final DLC made for The Evil within. In The Executioner, we follow The Kepper, a boss and secondary antagonist featured in the main game. The gameplay in The Executioner had made up for Juli Kidman’s stealth DLC by utilizing intense melee based combat. While although an enjoyable addition, The Evil Within had began to bounce back and fourth with it’s gameplay style, trying to find out if it’s an stealth horror or Action-Survival horror game.

In 2017, The evil Within 2 was released. The video game had been received poorly with fans of the old game, selling over four times LESS than the First game. The Evil Within two erases all aspects of Stealth horror and focuses completely on it’s action mechanics. It tries really hard to become a high budget open world AAA game, almost ignoring it’s predecessor completely. With lack of marketing, establishment, and a distinctive story, The Evil Within 2 was almost bound to fail. Additionally, the creator and director of the firt game, Shinji Mikami, had been an executive producer rather than the director with the making of The Evil WIthin 2.

Tango Gameworks, the studio that created The Evil Within and The Evil WIthin 2, had shut down in 2024. Luckly enough, the studio was revived and obtained by South Korean Video Game publisher Krafton a couple months after Tango Gameworks had shut down. Unfortunately, Krafton did not obtain the game rights to The Evil WIthin, which remain with Microsoft.
It’s unlikely we’ll ever receive any additional content for The Evil Within.
